Donna Gentile sings Folk-pop, Americana and Native Spirit-inspired originals and covers and is available for pow wows, festivals, retreats, events and as a headliner or opening act. She has had two very powerful medicine songs come through after praying to ancestors — A song for changing worlds called Crossing Over inspired by Tecumseh (Shawnee) while helping her father prepare for his passing; and a lullaby while pregnant called River Song for Kira inspired by American Indian tradition to aid in gentle birthing. These songs have found a home at pow wows along with An American Song for veterans and all those who serve.
When American Indians introduce themselves, it is customary to tell what clan you are from. So to honor that tradition, this page has been created.
Donna Gentile is Italian and Czechoslovakian on her Father’s side, and Irish, German and Lithuanian on her Mother’s side. She is native to North America (born in the northwest corner of Connecticut in the foothills of the Berkshires) and has strong spiritual connections to American Indian traditions. Her family suspects there may be American Indian in their father’s lineage, but they are not sure.
Gentile’s father (Ferinando “Fred” Gentile) changed worlds on July 28, 2013 while home on hospice. Just days before taking flight, Fred told his family he would be coming back as a Bald Eagle and to look for him. Three days prior to his passing, Donna prayed to ancestors for medicine to help her Dad prepare spiritually to cross over the Great Divide. She found a teaching by Tecumseh (Shawnee) called Live Your Life, which said to “prepare a noble death song for the day you go over the great divide,” and to “sing that song like a hero marching home.” Gentile told her Dad she would write him such a song. Then, realizing the magnitude of this promise, she prayed to ancestors for help. “Crossing Over” is the song that came through. Gentile had the profound honor of singing the song to her father just minutes before his soul took flight. She was told at Wolf Den Pow Wow (2013) that Crossing Over is a medicine song meant to give our loved ones wings.
